A Romantic Château Wedding in the South of France
Ellen & Ethan’s Elegant Celebration at Chateau Canet
Some love stories begin quietly — in ordinary places that later feel extraordinary.
Ellen and Ethan met in 2011 as teenagers working next door to each other. Ellen was a receptionist in a beauty salon; Ethan worked in the shop beside it. What began as proximity quickly became permanence.
Five years later, in 2016, Ethan proposed in the small French village of Pesmes while visiting his grandmother’s property. After dinner at a local pizzeria — in the era of unforgiving skinny jeans and post-meal reluctance — Ethan insisted on a walk.
Ellen was unimpressed.
He led her up hundreds of ancient stone steps to a panoramic viewpoint, only to find it crowded with teenagers. Slightly derailed but undeterred, he guided her back down. Halfway down the steps, Ellen paused to take a photograph. When she turned around, Ethan was on one knee.
It was imperfectly perfect — entirely them.
Nine years later, they finally gathered their closest family and friends in the South of France to become husband and wife.
A Destination Wedding Designed for Intimacy
Ellen and Ethan knew early on that they didn’t want a traditional, expansive wedding. They wanted something relaxed, immersive and deeply personal — a celebration where their guests could stay, swim, dine and truly experience the days surrounding it.
Chateau Canet offered exactly that.
With its sun-washed stone, olive groves and courtyard designed for long alfresco evenings, the château allowed everyone to settle in days before the ceremony. Mornings by the pool, slow preparations, shared meals — it felt less like an event and more like a private gathering in the French countryside.
Their ceremony took place beneath open skies, with Ellen’s father walking her down the aisle. Three heartfelt readings from several close family members added warmth and intimacy to the moment.
Light, Airy & Effortlessly French
The aesthetic was soft and romantic — pale blues and muted greens layered with gingham and delicate stripes, woven together with natural wood textures and abundant florals.
The overall feeling was light, airy and joyfully French.
Bridesmaids wore different dresses in complementary tones, creating movement and individuality within a cohesive palette. The groomsmen wore black tuxedos, grounding the softness with timeless structure.
Following the ceremony, a champagne tower set the tone for the afternoon — celebratory and cinematic — before guests wandered into the olive grove for canapés and confetti.
Dinner was served alfresco in the courtyard as the late afternoon light softened across the stone walls. Speeches followed the main course, bringing both laughter and emotion, before the surprise arrival of singing waiters lifted the energy entirely.
Instead of a traditional cake cutting, a beautifully styled dessert table became the focal point — a relaxed yet elegant alternative that suited the atmosphere perfectly.
Thoughtful Details & Personal Styling
Ellen wore a gown by Alena Leena, sourced from The Aisle, with alterations by Isobel Stuart. Her veil was by Richard Designs, later replaced with a dramatic cape for their evening entrance into the courtyard.
Her earrings were by Dior, and their wedding rings were crafted by Emma Greetham Jewellery — refined details that elevated the overall look.
Ethan wore tailoring from Charles Tyrwhitt, while the groomsmen’s classic suiting kept the aesthetic sharp and timeless.
Every piece of stationery and signage had been designed and created by the couple themselves — an impressive and deeply personal undertaking.
As golden hour approached, we captured detailed ring and hand portraits, followed by sunset imagery just before 9pm, when the French sky turned soft and luminous.
An Evening Under the French Sky
Their first dance, set to “Things You Can’t Change” by Rhys Lewis, unfolded in the courtyard as evening settled around them.
From there, the celebration continued with music, movement and the kind of atmosphere that only comes from gathering your closest people in one beautiful place.
It was joyful. Relaxed. Uncomplicated.
Exactly as they had imagined.
Ellen & Ethan’s Advice
Set regular wedding admin dates — and remember that the process passes far quicker than you expect.
If time feels limited, invest in support. And most importantly, design a celebration that allows you to feel comfortable, calm and present.
Their wedding at Chateau Canet was not about grandeur. It was about intimacy. Shared space. Sunlight. Family. Long tables and late evenings.
A celebration fourteen years in the making — thoughtful, romantic and entirely their own.
